Yes! I am indeed alive.
A few changes in my life:
a)I'm packing up and moving my ass from NY to CA...and it is consuming my life....plan to be back and blogging this weekend.
b)Thanks for all your support while I've been applying and crying over Grad schools...tis over now. I'll be starting my doctorate in the fall, like every good Korean Child should before they die. Now all I need to do is get married and pop out a kid or two and my work here is done.
c)My Korean Mom threatened to come and "clean" my apt in NY before I leave then go and "clean" my apt in CA when I move in. Although I admit, there is something magical about Korean Mom "cleanings". Everything is just so damn SPARKLY afterwards.
d)I am now 'Tweeting'
e)I missed you guys :)
Love for your KM,
Chiyo

My mother has "cleaned" every apartment I've moved in and out of, so I definitely understand! Glad to hear you'll be back to blogging. I'm a huge fan of your blog!
finally, a return. give us a triumphant one. blog about...hmmm, maybe menopausal kms?? make your manager proud.
the funny thing is, in korea no one cleans when they move out. that's why it's so important to when you move in. my mom doesn't call it "cleaning" she calls it "setting up house" and i too haven't set up house without her yet.
welcome back. and congrats on starting grad school.
Yay for coming to CA, I hope you enjoy it here!
And yay for you being back! We missed you.
Congrats on your doctoral acceptance. We have long-awaited your return!
Congratulations on getting into grad school. I am a big disappointment to my KM - I am not a "real doctor", and I am dating a non-Korean. Funny thing is, my mother is not a very good KM. She is messier than I am and not at all helpful in moving in and out of places.
If you're going to CA, remember to come back! There are so few of us out here on the east coast. I did my residency at UCD, and my parents feared I would never return.
I'm so glad your back! I was wondering where the posts have been~~ :)
Missed your posts! Congratulations on getting into grad school!!
congratulations! thank you for your posts. you are a gifted writer and you make me feel not so alone in the world of korean moms! :)
I'm not a Korean mom but I so enjoyed your blog, I made it a favorite!
Keep posting and congratz on your grad school entrance!
I am a Korean child trying to finish up my doctorate so I can get married and pop out some kids. My Korean Mom actually lives in Korea, so she doesn't get to do all the wonderful and/or scary KM things you blog about, so I read your blogs with a mixture of longing and relief. :) Congrats on grad school, and good luck!
Grad school! Congrats! Have fun moving into the new apartment!
I've been visiting your blog for a while and decided to go get my own KM--I'm moving to Korea for a year to live with a host family! I'm not sure if I hope she treats me like a long-lost Korean child, or if she spares me some of the particularly hilarious KM traits you've recorded...
Also, I linked your blog on my own because it's just so funny, but let me know if you want me to take it down.
I am a Korean chick currently visiting my family in Korea. I am feeling the KM love/hate in multiple degrees right now because of my current location lol and I enjoy very much reading your blog :)
I am starting grad school in the fall as well --> Kudos on getting in! I know it was dreadful applying and I also have to move across the country for it when I get back, I feel your pain ^^;
Well, good luck moving and settling down to start anew! Hope to read more from you again in the near future!
Much love for our KM~
Good luck on the doctorate!
these are great and my mom is just like that. i have a KM too. hilarious.
Hey awesome blog! I randomly typed in some quote I was trying to find the author of and for some reason your blog popped up. It just so happens I have a korean mom because i'm a halfie. Funny stuff, and very true. Good job on reaching the apex of being an Asian aka. getting your doctorate. Hopefully you'll make a lot of "dohn" later. That was a bad romanization of the word for money.
Speaking of grad school. KM's LOVE, LOVE, LOVE advanced degrees. Anyone who has a title ending with -sa... byun-ho-sa (lawyer), uh-sa (doctor), etc...
these people are automatically placed up on a pedastal.
Just another idea for a post.
My Korean mom never fails to "clean" my room whenever she comes to visit. Other people generally call it "snooping."
Have you settled yet? Will you be returning to the blogosphere?
maybe she'll also tie a huge ribbon to your bag so you can identify it at the airport. my aunts came to visit and now they're about to leave, and my mom tied a big ass christmas bow to their bag so it would stand out. hhaha
Please come back to blogging! You're awesome!
I think we must be cousins or something as our moms seem very similar...
good luck with school! don't forget to blog about the magical powers of korean food. my mom claims korea wasn't affected by SARS because of kimchi and koreans will never get sick from swine flu or any other influenza. they also claim mee-yuk gook cured some of the cancer victims of chernobyl.
another possible topic is the power of the korean mom quad muscles that allow them to squat and make kimchi for hours on end.
Hi Chiyo- this is off the topic but may inspire you for another entry. I have a KM and slowly but surely I find myself turning into a KM. You know- piano lessons, kumon, skank eye, the whole thing. I happened to mention to some white friends that I had to cancel my daughter's birthday party after printing the invites. They couldn't believe I did that and commented the only other kids they know of who had their bday parties cancelled were ALSO KOREAN. Apparently, cancelling the birthday party is the KM nuclear bomb threat for the elementary school set. Move over Dear Leader!
