#16 Washing Dishes

Most Korean moms do not believe in dishwashers. They say it "waste water" and "do not clean good," and prefer to roll up their sleeves and scrub with their bare hands. They often claim that loading a dishwasher requires more work than handwashing dishes themselves. Dishwashers do serve a very important function for Korean moms -- extra storage.

My mom used to use a dishwashed since I was very young and she loves to use dishwasher so i cant agree with this but yes my dad thinks it is waste of electrcity and water. but my mom loves using dishwasher every night.

However i am the one who never likes to use dishwasher and i just handwash all the dishes LOL!! i am so korean.

for awhile our dishwasher had a broken hose. that was why my mom said we didn't use it. "Dishwasher no work."

so being the loving son, i took it up on myself to get the dishwasher fixed.

that was 15 years ago. # of times dishwasher has been run . . . 0

"waste water" ROFLMAO that was exactly what she said when i asked why not!!

Want to hear something even funnier? As part of kitchen remodel, convinced my parents that they HAD to install DW, if any thought of selling house in future. Now, 4 yrs later and no sale in near future, manufacturer's tags still hanging in DW. Why, even tho my mom loves to use DW at my place? To keep DW in good condition for future purchaser. I just don't get it...

This blog is hilarious. I feel like you could replace most of the titles of "korean mom" with "chinese mom" and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference--my mom has a dishwasher she fills with her plastic, not-so-nice dishware and her excuse for that was because of "wasting water" but also "waste of electricity". Before she goes to sleep at night she checks to make sure the cable box is off and goes to my sister's room to shut off the modem--I have to go into her room every morning to switch it back on since I'm the first to use internet every day. Stingy!!!

You know, my taiwanese mom rarely uses her DW. Maybe once a month just to run it. My kmil used to be the same way until she had to replace her DW, because it rotted. When she found out that it would rot whether or not she used it, she decided, what the hell, she may as well use it if she's got one. I wish I could convince my mom of the same thing.

My Korean mother will hand wash the dishes until they are SPARLKING CLEAN...then load them in the dishwasher.
??????????????????????????????

I thought my KM was the only one who did this!! I didn't know how to use a dishwasher (and really thought they were just there to hold extra dishes and act as storage) until college!!

The oven is another extra storage cabinet that my KM uses.

*dying* I got the "waste water excuse too. Thank goodness I don't live at home anymore. I use the dishwasher with great satisfaction and think of her almost everytime I turn it on. Of course being the Korean mom that she is, she has already expressed the need to move in with me after I get out of grad school. I guess it will be back to handwashing then. LOL

My mom has finally gotten to courage to use the dishwasher on a regular basis. But, she still complains about feeling "guilty" for using the dishwasher. Once, I tried to unload the DW so I could put in dirty dishes. No no, just keep them in there so it stays full and then she can run it again. What a total waste of water!

I have to agree with the "waste water, waste electricity!" I never used one when I had it, but after 2 kids, I was dying for one. We finally moved into a house that had one and I gave it a go... Well, the dishes have a slightly uncomfortable dust of something on them, and they never feel as clean as when I do them. It is so much faster and cleaner to do them by hand! Now, I'm using it for extra storage too - for all the damn lock&locks!

Love always,
Heather
