#12 Pain

Korean moms are addicted to sacrifice and pain. If they were sexual beings, which they are not, they would be kinky and love S&M. They are convinced that no one has had it harder than them. They also enjoy letting their children know how much they have sacrificed and endured pain -- usually to give a guilt trip or to trivialize their children's own pain. (e.g. Child: "Mom, my legs hurt so bad from running a marathon." Korean Mom: "Waaah? You hurt from little exercise? I carried you and your father on my back, scrubbed floors and survived Korean War!! You run marathon? I run from communist! No one give me medal."). They also enjoy physical pain like acupuncture and massages that are really more like getting beaten by the mafia (except you're naked in a steam room).

My mil, the perpetual victim believes that she has had a miserable life (not really, I don't know many miserable ppl who drive lexuses and live in a rich neighborhoods). She told my DH that she wants to write a book. My DH said, "umma, there is already a book about that, it's called the joy luck club." Mil seemed surprised that books like that exist, lol.

Trust me - it's bad enough that OldMom, a classically trained mezzo-soprano, does to"Danny Boy" what Larry Flynt did to chickens whenever she's depressed, which is pretty much all the friggin' time.

There's shit on my mental Etch-a-Sketch that just won't shake off, so if you were to read any of her poetry (and yes, the unholy ravings DO exist), you'd welcome the kinder embraces of Arkham Asylum.

It's so weird that she can literally hold a pot that is BURNING and not get burned... She says it's from the hard years of work/torture and her hands are calloused enough to take it...

Love always,
Heather

oh my goodness.

Regarding massage...I am a white female currently living in South Korea. I got a massage at the gym, thinking it would be peaceful...I am still bruised, and woke up throughout the next from the pain of rolling on my back!

She punched my spine!! She rubbed oil on my back, covered me in a scratchy towel and scrubbed vigourously! OW from start to finish!

My Chinese mom always says how I've never endured any pain in my life, because when she was much younger than me, she went to the villages and worked in the fields all day long. Also, she would have to carry two really heavy buckets of water on a stick on her shoulders 50 miles a day.
